Gleann Mhairtin 4-10 Naomh Fionnbarra 4-05
Gleann Mhairtin got off to a winning start in the Intermediate Championship with a well deserved five point win over Naomh Fionnbarra in Monasterboice on Sunday morning.
The home side started the stronger of the two teams and opened up a 1-2 to no-score lead thanks to a goal from Aine Carolan and points from Aoife Russell and Katie Murphy. They probably should have been further ahead but failed to take many scoring chances in the first half.
Aideen Dunne got the ‘Barrs off the mark with a point and goals from Ciara McMahon and Grace Rogers got them back into the game. The visitors fightback continued and in fact they took a one point lead into the half-time break, 2-04 to 1-06.
The Monasterboice/Tullyallen girls came out a lot stronger in the second half and began to make the most of their chances. Marcella Molloy and Aoife Russell scored a goal and two points each and a goal from captain Sarah Maguire put them in a very strong position heading into the closing stages.
Two second half goals from Naomh Fionnbarra, including a penalty by Ciara McMahon, kept them in the hunt but they were unable to catch Gleann Mhairtin who ran out 5 point winners at the end of a very entertaining match. They will face Dreadnots in the next round of fixtures next Sunday.
