Geraldines head for semi-finals with a crucial win over The Blues

Geraldines 2-14  Newtown Blues 2-04

The Geraldines Ladies recorded their fourth win in the Louth Senior Championship with a hard-fought victory over the Newtown Blues in Drogheda.

Early in the match Paula Lavin’s charges set about their game plan with Rebecca Carr grabbing the opening point in the opening minute before setting the stall out of intent with a goal after four minutes. Carr made no mistake beating the keeper from range to slot it into the back of the net to give the current champions a four-point lead in the first five minutes.

The Newtown Blues were forced down to fourteen players following a foul on Eilis Hand which resulted in a yellow card and sin bin for a Newtown Blues player. Ciara O’Connor slotted over a well-taken effort before Victoria Fee outmuscled her marker to slot home her sides second goal of the game with a well-worked effort across the face of goal. Louise Corcoran and Rebecca Carr added further to the points tally as the experience of the side began to show. The Geraldines went into the break leading by ten points.

The Second Half saw the Geraldines further extend their lead with Rebecca Carr adding a brace of points before Ciara O’Connor was sent to the Sin Bin and the side had to finish the game with fourteen players. The player advantage to the Blues led to the side conceding two quickfire goals to bring the Newtown Blues back into contention of the game, however, the Geraldines regained their composure with scores from Lauren McFaul, Emma Gartlan and Rebecca Carr to see the away side restore their ten-point lead by the final whistle.
