All the possible permutations for the conclusion of the championship group stages

With the final weekend of fixtures approaching there are still many questions to be answered and many permutations possible in all groups of both the Senior and Intermediate Championships.

We’ve got the calculators out and outlined all the possible scenarios heading into a big day of Ladies Football in the Wee County on Sunday 30th August.

In the Senior and Intermediate grades the top two in each group qualify for the semi finals with the winner of Group 1 playing the runner up in Group 2 and vice versa. The Junior B competition resumes in September with the top two qualifying for the final.

Senior Championship

Group 1

The Geraldines have qualified as winners of Group 1 with three wins out of three and the second spot is between the remaining four teams.

There are various scenarios open for discussion with the two remaining games being St. Fechins v St. Mochtas and Newtown Blues v Geraldines with Cooley Kickhams having played their four games and sitting on six points. St. Fechins, St. Mochtas and Newtown Blues all have three points with one win each.

  1. Fechins and Geraldines win: Geraldines top Group 1 with 12 points and St. Fechins and Cooley Kickhams are joint second on six points with St. Mochtas and Newtown Blues finish with three points each. The head to head result of the St. Fechins v Cooley Kickhams game was a win for Cooley Kickhams so Cooley qualify in second place.
  2. Mochtas and Geraldines win: Geraldines top on 12, St. Mochtas and Cooley Kickhams joint second on six points and St. Fechins and Newtown Blues finish on three points. The head to head result of the Cooley Kickhams v St. Mochtas game was a win for St. Mochtas so the Mochtas qualify in second place.
  3. Fechins and Blues win: Geraldines top the Group on nine points and Cooley, the Fechins and Blues all joint second on six points with St. Mochtas on three. With three teams tied, qualification goes down to score difference between the teams. Cooley currently are +18, the Fechins are +7 and the Blues are -25. So Cooley would claim second spot.
  4. Mochtas and the Blues win: Similar to 3 above substituting the Mochtas for the Fechins. Again the score difference between the teams counts with Cooley again advancing on +13 with St. Mochtas -1 and Blues -12.

In summary, the Geraldines qualify first with Cooley in second in three of the four scenarios and otherwise only the Mochtas can qualify if they beat the Fechins. This makes the match on Sunday between St. Fechins and St. Mochtas the tie of the day with a draw being of no use to either team.

Group 2

There are still four teams in contention on the final day with St. Kevins/Hunterstown Rovers being the only team unable to control their own destiny. Stabannon Parnells cannot make the semi finals.

Again various scenarios must be considered as Roche Emmets v Stabannon Parnells and St. Brides v St. Patricks are the final fixtures in Group 2.

Currently Roche, Brides, Pats and Kevins/Hunterstown all sit on six points with all to play for on the final day.

  1. Roche Emmets and St. Brides win: Both will top Group 2 on nine points and qualify with St. Brides topping the group as winners of the head to head between the teams.
  2. Roche Emmets and St. Patricks win: Again both will top Group 2 on nine points and qualify with Roche topping the group as winners of the head to head between the teams.
  3. Stabannon and St. Brides win: Brides will top the group on nine points with Roche , Pats and Kevins/Hunterstown in joint second on six points. Score difference counts at this point with Roche qualifying in second place as currently the score difference between them is Kevins/Hunterstown -18, Roche +11 and Pats on +7 and each has played the other.
  4. Stabannon and St. Patricks win: St. Patricks will top the group on nine points and Roche, Brides and Kevins/Hunterstown share second on six points. Again score difference between them will decide matters and this time Kevins/Hunterstown will qualify second as their score difference is +9 Roche, +8, and Brides, -17.
  5. Stabannon and Roche draw and St. Brides win: St. Brides top Group on nine points and Roche finish second on seven points.
  6. Stabannon and Roche draw and St. Patricks win: St. Patricks top group on nine points and Roche finish second on seven points.
  7. Stabannon win and St. Brides and St. Patricks draw: St. Brides and St. Patricks finish joint top on seven points. Head to head is a draw so scores between the two teams taking both goals and points as single scores count. If this does not separate the teams then St. Patricks finish top on score difference +12 to -7.
  8. Roche win and St. Brides and St. Patricks draw: Roche top group on nine points and St. Patricks and St. Brides finish second with the scenario in 7 above counting.
  9. Both games a draw. Three teams joint top on seven points and score difference is straight in. The positions would be decided on score difference between the teams with the Brides +2, Roche -1 and Pats -1. St. Brides would top the group and then competition score difference would place St. Patricks second on +12 with Roche third +9.

Intermediate Championship

As with the Senior Championship the Intermediate Championship has many different possibilities as the last weekend of fixtures approaches. Each group has four teams so all teams are in play this weekend.

Group 1

In Group 1, all four teams are still in with a chance of qualifying for the semi finals. The remaining games in Group A are Gleann Mhairtin v Clan na Gael and Kilkerley Emmets v Ardee St. Marys.

  1. Gleann Mhairtin and Kilkerley Emmets win: This would be an interesting scenario as it would leave Gleann Mhairtin, Kilkerley and Clan na Gael all on six points and score difference between the teams would determine placings. With Gleann Mhairtin on -11, Kilkerley Emmets on +2 and Clan na Gael on +9, the Clans seem to be in a strong position as Gleann Mhairtin would need to win by 11 points to pass the Clans and at least get second spot. A very tall order based on previous results in the competition. The Clans have a 7 point advantage over Kilkerley so for Kilkerley to top the group the combined difference in scores of the two games on Sunday needs to be eight points or more. The probable final positions are Clan na Gael, Kilkerley Emmets and Gleann Mhairtin in that order.
  2. Gleann Mhairtin and Ardee St. Marys win: Gleann Mhairtin and Clan na Gael would jointly top the group on six points but Gleann Mhairtin would be placed first based on the head to head with the Clans.
  3. Clan na Gael and Kilkerley Emmets win: Clans would top the group with the maximum nine points and KIlkerley finish second with six points.
  4. Clan na Gael and Ardee St. Marys win: The Clans top the group and there would be a three way tie on three points between Kilkerley, Gleann Mhairtin and St. Marys. Score difference between the teams would decide second place. Currently Kilkerley, +11, are in the driving seat with Gleann Mhairtin, -8, and St. Marys,-3. St. Marys would need to beat Kilkerley by eight points to turn the tables.
  5. Gleann Mhairtin and Clan na Gael draw and Kilkerley Emmets win: The Clans would top the group on seven points and Kilkerley finish second on six points.
  6. Gleann Mhairtin and Clan na Gael draw and Ardee St. Marys win: The Clans would finish top on seven points but this time Gleann Mhairtin would finish second on four points.
  7. Gleann Mhairtin win and Kilkerley and Ardee St. Marys draw: Gleann Mhairtin and the Clans would finish joint top with six points and Gleann Mhairtin would be placed first based on their head to head result with the Clans.
  8. Clan na Gael win and Kilkerley and St. Marys draw: The Clans would top the group with the maximum nine points and Kilkerley would take second place on four points.
  9. Both games are a draw: Again the Clans top the group on seven points and Kilkerley and Gleann Mhairtin finish joint second on four points. Kilkerley would claim second place based on the head to head.

Group 2

Group 2 is also very dependent on results on the day with three teams still in a position to advance to the semi finals with O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts as the only team with no chance. The remaining games are O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts v Naomh Fionnbarra and Glyde Rangers v Dreadnots.

  1. O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts and Glyde Rangers win: Glyde Rangers would finish top of the group on six points and Naomh Fionnbarra and Dreadnots would be joint second on four points each. As their head to head ended in a draw their positions would be determined on scores in their match. The score was Naomh Fionnbarra 3.07 Dreadnots 2.10 so Dreadnots would finish second based on 12 scores to 10 in the match.
  2. O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts and Dreadnots win: Dreadnots would finish top on seven points and Naomh Fionnbarra would finish second on four points.
  3. Naomh Fionnbarra and Glyde Rangers win: Naomh Fionnbarra would top the group on seven points with Glyde in second on six points.
  4. Naomh Fionnbarra and Dreadnots win: Both would finish on seven points and as the head to head was a draw they would be separated by scores. As noted earlier the Dreadnots 12 to Fionnbarrs 10 scores would place Dreadnots first and Naomh Fionnbarra second.
  5. O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts draw with Naomh Fionnbarra and Glyde Rangers win: Glyde would top the group with six points and Naomh Fionnbarra would take second with five points.
  6. O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts draw with Naomh Fionnbarra and Dreadnots win: Dreadnots would finish top of the group with seven points and Naomh Fionnbarra would take second on five points.
  7. O’Raghallaighs/Oliver Plunketts win and Glyde Rangers draw with the Dreadnots: Dreadnots would top the group on five points and Glyde and the Fionnbarrs would both end up on four points. Naomh Fionnbarra would take second place based on their head to head result against Glyde.
  8. Naomh Fionnbarra win and Glyde Rangers draw with the Dreadnots: Naomh Fionnbarra would top the group with seven points and Dreadnots would take second place on five points.
  9. Both games end in a draw: Naomh Fionnbarra and the Dreadnots both finish on top on five points. As their head to head was a stalemate the scores again count with Dreadnots top and Naomh Fionnbarra second.
